Project Description

Artistic and contemporary, imaginative and inspiring, cutting edge and cool – a new creative, cultural and innovation quarter in the heart of Edinburgh. Demolition of Existing City of Edinburgh Council Shed buildings. Hub by Premier Inn, Edinburgh 121 bedroom hub by Premier Inn. This will be the first hub by Premier Inn to open outside London. The hub hotel & Premier Inn will sit next to each other as a combined £18 million contract with entrances on East Market Street and Cranston Street. Premier Inn, Edinburgh 127 bedroom, 6-storey Premier Inn hotel.

Challenges

The site was located along a notably busy street opposite a number of offices including the local council. Therefore, regular communication with the neighbouring residents and businesses was essential especially in regards to logistics. Very late in the programme, the building structure changed from a Timber Frame to reinforced concrete. This was achieved through a detailed fast-track design process involving McAleer & Rushe, our Structural Engineer & Architect.

Solutions

Due to the singular use of the pod design within the hub by Premier Inn, any disruption to the supply or design process between operator and supplier would significantly delay the overall programme. We were able to overcome such setbacks through regular liaison with the pod manufacturer and careful programming of the façade and fit-out works on a weekly basis.

“The opening of the two Whitbread hotels at New Waverley marks an exciting turning point for the regeneration of this historic part of Edinburgh’s Old Town. It’s been a great working partnership with Whitbread, and together we are at last breathing new life into what has been a neglected part of Edinburgh’s historic city centre.”
