Project Description

McAleer & Rushe are onsite with the exciting regeneration of a circa 1.75-acre city centre site and demolishment of the former 1960’s shopping centre.

The consented mixed use redevelopment comprises of 575 purpose built student beds over 9-storeys in a courtyard arrangement along with 20,000 sq ft of ground level large format retail / leisure or restaurant space.

This £100m investment in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne will support some 780 jobs directly through the construction period and a net longer term gain of up to 153 new full time jobs on the site. The inclusion of modern retail and leisure space on ground and basement levels on Clayton Street and Newgate Street will attract highly significant interest from a range of favourable brands due to the highly prominent city centre location which will further the associated long-term economic and employment benefits for the city.

The Site

McAleer & Rushe are onsite with the exciting regeneration of a circa 1.75-acre city centre site and demolishment of the former 1960’s shopping centre. The consented mixed use redevelopment comprises of 575 purpose built student beds over 9-storeys in a courtyard arrangement. The 185,000 sq ft of student accommodation will be operated by Unite Students, a leading provider of student housing and Dalata Hotel Group plc has committed to a 35-year lease of the flagship Maldron hotel.

“We are delighted that planning consent for this exciting new development has been granted. The project forms an important part of Unite Students‘ ongoing regional development plans. “Our core purpose at Unite Students is providing our students with a ‘Home for Success’. This means helping them achieve more from their time at university, whether that is academic success, personal growth or employability. “Newcastle is an exciting university city attracting students from across the UK and internationally. As well as easing pressure on private residential housing in the area this new development will provide an important contribution to the local economy.”
