Project Description

A 237 key hotel for the Maldron brand, the project involved the demolition of the existing Belfast Metropolitan College building and forms part of a mixed use development; the other half of the site being a 476-bed student accommodation for Queens University Belfast.

It comprises of restaurant and bar amenities, five meeting rooms and conference facilities.

The Site

The 4-star hotel is located in the heart of Belfast City and within walking distance of shops, restaurants and historic landmarks making it the perfect hotel for any city break.

The hotel sits on the site of the former Belfast Metropolitan College and has an entrance facing on to Blackstaff Square with the historical building, Blackstaff Chambers adjoining the site.

Regeneration

McAleer & Rushe acquired the site in August 2014 and developed the scheme to comprise of a hotel and student accommodation scheme which was subsequently contracted to Dalata Hotel Group and Queens University. Belfast City Council approved plans for the 13-storey development, designed by Belfast-based Consarc Design Group.

The site sits within an area known as ‘The Linen Quarter’ which Belfast City Council and other government agencies have targeted for major regeneration with plans including a major upgrade of the urban streetscape.

“We are delighted to announce the development of a new Maldron Hotel in central Belfast, providing an extra 206 rooms in the city. RevPar growth was strong in 2015 in our existing Northern Irish hotels and we have been keen to expand our portfolio in Belfast. This new hotel continues the rapid growth of the Maldron brand on the island of Ireland and we look forward to working with McAleer & Rushe on the development.”
