Sustainability is integral to everything that we do, our sustainability strategy focuses on making a positive impact in our local communities and effectively managing our environmental impacts. We work with our Clients to embed Sustainability principles throughout the design and construction stages on our project to provide long lasting benefits to future users and the local communities we work.

Carbon Reduction

McAleer & Rushe are committed to reducing our carbon emissions and are continuing to work with our clients and supply chain to help combat climate change and reduce the cost of constructing and operating buildings. We continue to maximise the use of sustainable technologies within the design of our buildings and to seek ways to proactively reduce our carbon emissions throughout the Construction process. Since 2018, we have achieved a 10% reduction in our Company carbon emissions, and we were awarded a Green apple award for our carbon reduction efforts. Key initiatives included the use of solar and hybrid technologies on our sites and upgrading of our site and office lighting.

Resource Efficiency

We are committed to reducing the amount of waste generated by optimising the use of resources through responsible design and efficient site operations. We continue to work with our Clients, Design Teams and Supply Chain to investigate waste reduction opportunities, reduce unnecessary packaging waste and maximise recycling.

In 2019 we reduced the amount of Construction by 6% reduction in the amount of construction waste generated in relation to company turnover. In 2019 we also successfully diverted 98% of Construction waste generated from landfill by segregating waste streams on sites where space permitted and by working with our specialist waste contractors and visiting their recycling facilities.

Waste initiatives implemented in 2019 included:

  • Design team material efficiency workshops
  • Offsite fabrication of items
  • Designing out waste through pre-cut plasterboard which has resulted in savings of 10% on each project they have been used
  • On site crushing of Demolition waste
  • Cut and fill to maximise reuse of material
  • On site waste segregation
  • Supplier takeback schemes
  • Community recycling initiatives to include participation in the Considerate Constructors Big Build initiative
  • On site baling of plastic and cardboard

Biodiversity

We engage ecologists on all projects and work with them to ensure protection of ecological features and habitats and to promote biodiversity on all projects. We have incorporated a range of biodiversity measures within the design of our buildings and we implement ecology protection plans on all project. From bug hotels to creating new habitats for butterflies, our sites teams are always looking for new ways to maximise biodiversity.
